about
CHEEN (Cherine Amr) is an Egyptian musician, composer, and multidisciplinary artist known for her long-standing role in Egypt’s underground rock and metal scenes. She is the founder and frontwoman of Massive Scar Era and also works under the solo moniker CHEEN, exploring electro-punk and experimental forms.
Active since the mid-2000s, her work has contributed to the development of alternative music culture in Egypt through recordings, international performances, and cross-disciplinary projects. SceneNoise has described Amr as “the matriarch of Egypt’s rock underground,” in recognition of her sustained influence and leadership within the scene.
Her career and music have been featured in internationally recognized documentaries including Microphone (2010), directed by Ahmad Abdalla, and Before the Spring: After the Fall (2012), directed by Jed Rothstein, both of which document Egypt’s independent and underground music movements.
“CHEEN has found a way to make her messages sharper than ever, delivering this particular one with the kind of energy we’ve come to expect from the ‘matriarch’ of Egypt’s rock underground.”
